The moments that define a legacy.

This photo captures one of the proudest moments of my Army career as an NCO. The Soldier I’m pinning Sergeant rank on was someone I had the privilege of mentoring from the time he was a PFC. He was there through countless training rotations in Alaska and California, and later deployed with me to Iraq, where I watched him put into practice the skills, discipline, and confidence that our team had worked to develop in him. Seeing him earn the rank of Sergeant meant more to me than simply watching a Soldier get promoted. He was the first person I had the opportunity to mentor from a junior Soldier into an NCO, and his success showed me the kind of leader, mentor, and teacher I wanted to continue becoming. What makes this photo even more meaningful is where it was taken: inside our aid station in Iraq. That was a place where we worked side by side caring for patients, saving lives, and training other medics to become more capable and confident in their own careers. Leadership there was never just about rank or authority. It was about preparing the people around you to perform when it mattered most and helping them grow into leaders themselves. This moment has stayed with me because it reinforced one of the most important lessons I took from the Army: a leader’s success is measured in part by the people they develop and the leaders they leave behind. That is a standard I have carried with me ever since.
