About
Reuben Kabantiyok is a doctoral researcher in mechanical engineering at The University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. His research focuses on advanced materials and fatigue mechanics, particularly improving the fatigue performance of Nitinol and other shape memory alloys used in biomedical applications. His work involves materials characterization, fatigue testing, digital image correlation, and failure analysis, with the goal of improving the reliability and performance of materials used in cardiovascular implants. Before beginning his doctoral studies, Reuben built an extensive engineering career in Nigeria, spending nearly 14 years with the Defense Industry Corporation of Nigeria. During his tenure, he progressed through positions including Senior Engineer, Principal Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer and leadership roles, gaining valuable experience in engineering, materials science, and the defense sector. He later earned a Master of Science in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom, where he developed expertise in nanofabrication, semiconductor design, biosensing, and advanced materials characterization. He also gained industry experience through engineering internships at Boston Scientific, where he worked on fatigue testing, defect characterization, experimental design, and digital image correlation for biomedical components. Beyond his academic and professional work, Reuben is committed to mentorship, community development, and advancing engineering knowledge. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Metallurgical Society, a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, and a member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He also founded the Shared Humanity Foundation, through which he has supported poverty-alleviation efforts and developed leadership, empathy, and community-building skills and Boys2Men Coaching and Mentoring Network through which he guides and support boys as they transition to manhood. Reuben's professional philosophy is grounded in honesty, integrity, transparency, and sincerity, particularly because of the potential impact engineering and materials research can have on human lives.

IN HIS OWN WORDS
The Q and A
-
01
What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my relationship with JESUS CHRIST and how that has strengthened my drive, passion, and perseverance, to keep me focused and motivated to overcome challenges and achieve my goals.
-
02
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Just keep doing your thing and you'll be unstoppable. My professional mentor told me to just keep doing my thing because I do things even when people are not watching, and that sets me apart.
-
03
What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?
Perseverance—keep doing the work. Anything BIG is a sum of small + small + small + …
-
04
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge in the Nitinol field is material fatigue, which remains a critical issue for improving the reliability and performance of Nitinol applications. At the same time, there are exciting opportunities in the elastocaloric field, particularly for energy-efficient technologies that could potentially save up to 10 times more energy in applications such as air-conditioning systems.
-
05
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty, integrity, transparency, and sincerity are core, especially in my field dealing with human lives. Whatever you see in the lab should be what you report. I also value mentorship to help men and boys become better.
