About

Dustin Hinkle is the Service Manager at RailQuip, responsible for all equipment they sell from Canada to Mexico. He has spent 34 years in the railroad industry, beginning at age 14 by working weekends with his father on locomotives at coal mines. After his father retired from the railroad and started a company, Dustin worked as a contractor for several years before joining RailQuip as lead technician and advancing to service manager. His background includes government contract work with X-ray and testing equipment at Leidos, where he often taught classes, as well as contracts with Progress Rail (owned by Caterpillar) assisting in locomotive builds and with SCRRA in Los Angeles on a major project to place 40 leased locomotives into service after a derailment. A self-described jack-of-all-trades, Dustin has served as mechanic, technician, electrician, and communicator, frequently training employees and temporarily running operations such as a passenger rail line out of Camp Pendleton in California. He graduated high school a year early due to earning sufficient credits as an overachiever and credits his father, a former Marine, for instilling his strong work ethic. Outside his primary role, Dustin co-writes children's books with his daughter and donates to All Hands and All Hearts.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Work hard but not to kill myself while doing it. There's a time to work and there's a time to play. When you're on the clock your focus is your job. When you're off the clock focus is your family and yourself. Never take the job home with you.

  2. 02

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

Try it. Apply. Talk to people. Let them know they're interested. Apply yourself. Know that you're gonna work hard but know you're gonna earn the money. There's no better feeling than actually earning your money with your own hands.

  3. 03

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Everybody wants someone that graduates from college but the guy hiring wants the guy that can actually do the work so it's a conflict of interest. Finding people that are qualified or capable of doing the job.
