A self-taught entrepreneur, James built FireFly around a simple belief: people learn and connect best through shared experiences. That period taught me that resilience is not about enduring change—it's about embracing it.

01
What has been the biggest turning point in your career?
The pandemic. It forced me to rethink assumptions, reinvent parts of the business, and become a better leader.
The lessons from that period fundamentally changed how I think about growth and resilience.
02
What mistake taught you the most?
Trying to pursue too many opportunities at once.
I learned that focus creates momentum. Businesses often grow faster when they say "no" to good opportunities so they can fully commit to great ones.
03
How do you define success?
Success is creating meaningful value for other people while building a life and business that align with your values.
Revenue matters, but impact, relationships, freedom, and fulfillment matter too.
04
What separates great leaders from average ones?
Great leaders create clarity, build trust, and develop other people.
Average leaders focus on managing tasks. Great leaders focus on helping people succeed.
05
What are you most proud of building?
My company is my pride.
The events and experiences we create have impacted tens of thousands of people, strengthened teams, and contributed to meaningful charitable causes. Knowing that our work makes a positive difference is incredibly rewarding.

I have a team I love.
06
What motivates you to keep growing?
Curiosity.
I love learning, solving problems, creating new experiences, and finding better ways to help people work and connect together. Every year presents new challenges and new opportunities to improve, and that's what keeps me engaged.
07
What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs?
Start before you feel ready.
You don't need the perfect business plan or website or prototype. In my experience, progress comes from taking action, learning quickly, and adjusting as you go.

Stay curious. Learn constantly. Build relationships. Focus on solving real problems for real people.

Most importantly, remember that success is rarely the result of a single breakthrough. It's usually the accumulation of thousands of small decisions made consistently over time.
08
How would you describe your leadership philosophy?
My leadership philosophy is built around trust, ownership, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
I believe leaders should spend less time trying to control outcomes and more time creating environments where great work can happen naturally. The best teams have clarity, psychological safety, accountability, and a shared sense of purpose. The more successful I've become, the more I've realized the best ideas can come from anywhere — if you're willing to listen.
09
What's next for FireFly Team Events?
We're continuing to expand nationally, develop new offerings, and explore how experiential learning can help organizations thrive in an increasingly digital world.
My focus is on helping organizations create those connections through innovative experiences, leadership development programs, and new tools that make teamwork more effective and more human.

Closing Perspective

Two decades of that kind of curiosity don't just build a business. They build a founder who knows exactly why the old model was broken and exactly what to replace it with.
