About

Robert Toet is a seasoned project manager and engineering leader with five decades of experience spanning civil engineering, project management, and complex international projects. He began his career at age 17 in the Netherlands, working for an American company in The Hague while pursuing his education through evening and weekend classes. Throughout his early career, he advanced through positions with British and American firms, earning an associate degree in mechanical engineering and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from institutions in the Netherlands. His dedication to professional growth and technical expertise laid the foundation for a career that would take him across Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia.
Toet has spent more than 25 years with Fluor Corporation across multiple assignments, including positions in the Netherlands, Canada, and New Jersey, ultimately relocating to the United States. Throughout his career, he has managed complex projects across the nuclear, mining, power generation, and industrial sectors. His experience includes contributing to billion-dollar power projects and overseeing engineering and construction activities for major mining operations in Greece, including the Skouries and Olympias projects. He has also held leadership positions with Eldorado Gold and Stantec, where he managed multidisciplinary teams, coordinated engineering and construction activities, and supported large-scale mining infrastructure and environmental initiatives. His technical expertise encompasses structural systems, bridges, engineering design, and 3D modeling, complemented by a strong focus on safety, quality, and project execution.
Beyond his technical accomplishments, Toet attributes his success to maintaining curiosity, paying close attention to detail, and taking pride in his work. He believes that continuous learning and a willingness to understand how systems function are essential to solving complex engineering challenges. Equally important to him is the value of mentorship and teamwork. Having benefited from the guidance of experienced professionals early in his career, he is committed to passing that knowledge on to younger engineers and project managers. Through his leadership, technical knowledge, and dedication to developing others, Toet continues to contribute to major engineering projects while helping the next generation of professionals build successful careers.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

Being curious and paying attention has given me more opportunities than colleagues because I wanted to take things further and nurture what I was doing.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Stay curious and really pay attention. Nurture whatever you're doing because it goes a long way.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

Same advice: be curious, pay attention, and nurture what you're doing.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

AI and data centers are a big challenge because they are new, and there is risk in shortcutting proven steps in engineering and construction, especially for critical projects like nuclear. We need to maintain control over our own problem-solving and destiny rather than relying solely on AI outputs.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being inspired by mentors early in my career helped me, and I want to pay it forward by inspiring younger people through mentorship.
