“I attribute my success to refusing to let what happened to me be the end of my story. There were moments when surviving was the accomplishment, and everything I have built came after that. I took the pain, the silence, and the experience of not being believed and turned them into purpose. I kept showing up, even when I was exhausted, discouraged, or afraid that no one would listen.I also attribute my success to the survivors who trusted me with their stories. They showed me that what I experienced was bigger than one person or one relationship. Every message from someone who finally felt understood reinforced why this work mattered. Most importantly, I never set out simply to build a platform. I set out to build what I needed when I was fighting to survive: language that explained what was happening, resources that were actually useful, a community that believed survivors, and a voice loud enough to challenge systems that too often fail them. My success comes from turning survival into service and refusing to be silent about what nearly destroyed me.”

About

Daniel Ryan Cotler is a survivor, author, and advocate working to transform the way severe psychological abuse is understood, recognized, and addressed. He is the founder and executive director of the Heal Loudly Movement, creator of the Narcissistic Psychological Warfare framework, author of Voiceless No More: The Legal War on Narcissistic Abuse, and creator of the Voiceless Justice Act, an advocacy initiative calling for stronger legal recognition, protection, and accountability for survivors of psychological abuse and coercive control.

Drawing from lived experience, research, and years of survivor advocacy, Cotler developed the eight-stage Narcissistic Psychological Warfare framework to identify the systematic progression of manipulation, coercive control, identity erosion, dependency, psychological punishment, captivity, and post-separation abuse. His work challenges the tendency to reduce these experiences to simply “toxic relationships” and gives survivors language to describe patterns of abuse that can otherwise be extraordinarily difficult to explain.

Through the Heal Loudly Movement, Cotler has built a survivor-centered platform focused on education, peer-to-peer support, practical resources, public awareness, suicide prevention, and systemic change. His advocacy extends beyond awareness through the Voiceless Justice Act, which represents his effort to bring the experiences of survivors into conversations about law, institutional accountability, and meaningful protection.

At the center of Cotler’s work is a determination to make invisible abuse visible and ensure survivors no longer have to fight alone to prove the harm they endured. What began with his own decision to break the silence has become a larger mission to educate communities, challenge institutions, and amplify voices that have too often gone unheard.

His message is captured in the words that define the Heal Loudly Movement: “We heal loudly because we almost died in silence.”

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to refusing to let what happened to me be the end of my story. There were moments when surviving was the accomplishment, and everything I have built came after that. I took the pain, the silence, and the experience of not being believed and turned them into purpose. I kept showing up, even when I was exhausted, discouraged, or afraid that no one would listen.

I also attribute my success to the survivors who trusted me with their stories.

My success comes from turning survival into service and refusing to be silent about what nearly destroyed me.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received came from an unexpected source: my abuser, who once told me, “You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.” Those words stayed with me, but over time, they took on a meaning far beyond the circumstances in which they were spoken. I came to understand that even the most painful experiences can become catalysts for transformation. I learned to trust myself, surrender to the process, and recognize that sometimes the path we never would have chosen for ourselves leads us directly to our purpose. Some of the darkest chapters of my life ultimately became the foundation for the work I do today.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

My advice to young men entering this industry is to get involved, find your voice, and have the courage to speak your truth. If you have experienced abuse, know that your story has value and that sharing your experiences can help others feel less alone. Use your voice to advocate for yourself and others, and never underestimate the impact your perspective can have.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in my field is increasing awareness and education around narcissistic abuse and ensuring that survivors are heard and supported. I am committed to advocating for meaningful change, including improvements to laws and policies surrounding abuse. I also see an important opportunity to educate first responders so they are better equipped to recognize patterns of emotional and psychological abuse and understand what victims may be experiencing. By expanding awareness, education, and advocacy, I hope to help create greater understanding and more effective support for survivors.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty, kindness, and integrity are the core values that guide me in both my personal and professional life. I strive to treat others with compassion and respect, remain authentic in my interactions, and approach every situation with honesty and integrity. These values shape how I build relationships, make decisions, and contribute to the people and communities I serve.
