About

Andrew Horman, M.A., is a disability advocate and emerging mental health counseling professional based in San Antonio, Texas. Alongside his work as a customer service agent, Horman has spent the past several years training for his career in mental health counseling while balancing professional responsibilities with his academic pursuits. He earned his Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Our Lady of the Lake University, with his degree conferred on August 14, 2026, following his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Ashford University. He is currently pursuing the initial licensure process necessary to start practice as an associate therapist. During his clinical training, Horman gained valuable experience in crisis intervention, acute care counseling, individual therapy, clinical intake, trauma-informed care, and disability-focused practice.

His internship with UT Health San Antonio placed him on the behavioral health front lines, where he worked with individuals experiencing acute distress, panic attacks, and psychiatric emergencies and helped provide stabilization and prevent unnecessary emergency department visits and psychiatric hospitalizations as well as seeing individual clients. He also co-facilitated mindfulness and PTSD recovery groups and supported continuity-of-care efforts for patients transitioning from hospital settings. During his schooling and this experience, Horman created and refined Motif Mapping, an innovative theoretical and clinically supportedl counseling framework developed from a disability-informed perspective that seeks to center the experiences and needs of disabled individuals rather than simply adapting existing therapeutic models. He has submitted his theoretical, clinically supported framework for publication and continues to explore accessible, affirming approaches to mental health care.

Horman’s professional interests are complemented by his commitment to leadership, advocacy, and service. He has been affiliated with the National Society of Leadership and Success, where he served as a chapter president for approximately six to twelve months, as well as the Texas Counseling Association. His contributions to his university community were recognized with a Rising Star Award. As a lifelong wheelchair user, he draws on both lived experience and clinical training to advocate for greater accessibility, inclusion, and dignity in healthcare and counseling. Horman attributes his success to his family, whose encouragement taught him not to feel sorry for himself and instead to find a way forward when faced with obstacles. He carries that resilience into his professional life and is guided by two core values: honesty and integrity.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my family and close friend, who have always encouraged me to keep moving forward despite being physically disabled. They never allowed me to sit back and feel sorry for myself; instead, they taught me to focus on what is possible and to find a way to overcome every obstacle. Their unwavering support has shaped my resilience, determination, and belief that there is always a way to accomplish something—you simply have to be willing to find it.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to slow down and not rush through things. Taking the time to think, listen, and approach each situation thoughtfully has helped me make better decisions, avoid unnecessary mistakes, and ultimately become more effective in my career.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

The advice I would give to young men entering my industry is to be prepared for challenges and understand that the journey will not always be easy. There will be moments when the pressure and obstacles may make you feel like giving up, but perseverance is essential. Stay committed, keep pushing forward, and remember that the challenges you overcome will make the experience well worth it.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges in my field right now include addressing discrimination and creating more inclusive workplaces for people with disabilities. I have personally encountered situations where I was told that I could not be in a particular environment because I use a wheelchair, and experiences like that highlight the need for greater awareness and acceptance. Another significant challenge is burnout among counselors who dedicate themselves so deeply to supporting their clients that they sometimes neglect their own well-being. I believe it is essential for counselors to recognize that taking care of themselves is not selfish; it allows them to continue providing the best possible care to others.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are honesty and integrity. I believe in being truthful, dependable, and consistent in my words and actions. These principles guide how I treat others, make decisions, and approach my responsibilities, and they are essential to building trust and maintaining meaningful relationships.
