There is a conversation the security industry needs to have.
For too long, the actions and reputation of a small portion of the contract security industry have cast a shadow over the professionals who take this responsibility seriously.
But the security industry has changed—and it continues to evolve.
Today, armed security officers can be entrusted with protecting some of the most important critical infrastructure in the United States. Power generation, energy, manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, communications, and other essential facilities depend on security professionals who are prepared to respond when something goes wrong.
These officers are not simply standing at a post.
They are immediate responders.
When an emergency occurs, security personnel may be among the first people on the scene. Their decisions, communication, situational awareness, judgment, and ability to respond appropriately can have consequences far beyond the property they are protecting.
The days of viewing security as an untrained or uneducated occupation need to be left behind.
Professional armed security requires training, discipline, judgment, integrity, accountability, and continuous development. It requires people who understand that carrying a firearm is not a status symbol—it is a responsibility.
And yes, armed security is an honorable career.
But if we expect security professionals to accept greater responsibility, the industry must be willing to invest in them.
That means:
• Better and more consistent training
• Meaningful continuing education
• Professional development and leadership opportunities
• Higher standards for hiring and retention
• Competitive compensation
• Stronger recognition of the responsibilities officers carry
• Greater cooperation between security, law enforcement, emergency management, and other public-safety partners
We cannot demand professional performance while treating the profession as disposable labor.
The people protecting America's critical infrastructure deserve to be recognized as professionals—and compensated accordingly.
Security is not simply about protecting property. It is about protecting people, continuity, and the systems our country depends upon.
As threats continue to evolve, the importance of a capable security workforce will only increase.
Perhaps the future resilience of our country depends, in part, on whether we are willing to recognize the people standing on the front lines of that responsibility.
This is simply a reflection point from my observations of the industry.
Raise the standard. Invest in the profession. Respect the responsibility.
