About

Mathew Lindholm is a Platform Engineer (SkillBridge Intern) at Defense Unicorns. As he completes a 20-year U.S. Army career, he brings experience spanning infantry, aviation, and AI infrastructure.

He enlisted in 2006 and spent seven years in the infantry, rising to Staff Sergeant and serving as a squad leader. He earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, and Pathfinder, Airborne, and Military Mountaineer qualifications. After graduating from flight school as a Distinguished Graduate, he served nearly a decade as a UH-60M Black Hawk pilot. His roles included Pilot in Command, Air Mission Commander, Unit Trainer, and Aviation Mission Survivability Officer.

In 2023, Lindholm joined the Army Artificial Intelligence Integration Center, where he supported the Infrastructure and Platforms portfolio. He designed and deployed Kubernetes-based AI inference infrastructure using FastAPI and gRPC, built Next.js applications, and authored Terraform and Ansible modules for repeatable deployments. He also contributed to DevSecOps pipelines and compliance efforts in federal environments.

He completed Carnegie Mellon University’s AI Cloud Technician Program, ranking first in his class. Lindholm holds associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in accounting and is pursuing a master’s degree in applied business analytics.

He credits his success to a strong work ethic, a sense of calling rooted in faith, a passion for his craft, and his wife’s support. His advice to others is straightforward: take ownership of your career and pursue the work that matters to you.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a strong work ethic, a sense of calling rooted in my faith, a passion for my craft, and the steadfast support of my wife.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I have received is that my career is my own. No one will care about it more than I do, so I should go out and pursue it.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

I would pass along the same advice I was given: your career is yours, and no one will care about it more than you will, so take ownership of it. If you are passionate about something, go after it.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I see AI as a tool, and like any tool, you get out what you put into it. It won’t turn a poor engineer into a senior engineer, but used appropriately, it can help an experienced engineer work more efficiently. Without the technical understanding to evaluate its output, it can also introduce insecure code and create more work down the line. The opportunity is knowing where AI adds value while retaining responsibility for the quality and security of what you build.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Hard work, education, and faith guide both my work and my personal life.
