IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to determination. I was determined to be more than what individuals could see me as being. Early on I was told that I would never live to see the age of 17 because I am from the west side of Chicago, so my life expectancy was supposed to have been very short-lived.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was to believe in myself and never give up. One of my mentors gave me that advice because sometimes individuals stop believing in themselves and when you stop believing in yourself you kind of kill your dream. The fight was to always believe in yourself and never give up, and it was at a time when I really needed to hear that.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

I would advise young men entering the industry to believe in themselves and know that anything is possible if you believe. Faith can make a difference. Keep it simple because some individuals' level of interpretation is not on a college or high school level. Meet people where they are.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Healthcare is always an open opportunity. As a nursing home administrator there is always opportunity given the aging population and baby boomers coming of age, the largest segment of the aging population at 61 million or better. Nursing homes are not going to go away. The United States has an attitude of hurry up and die but we are a big commodity.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty is a cornerstone of my character. I learned early on to be honest because I enjoy having peace of mind. It took me a while to understand the importance of honesty in my life and being able to share that with other individuals who may not have the confidence to believe in themselves.
