Lead From the Front. Not From the Rear.

Ive been a public servant since I was 18 years old. From my time serving our country in the US Army to my time serving many communities in the NYPD, and I’ve always try to live by this motto. Leaders lead from the front, not from the rear. That resonated with me. That means before you ask your employees or fellow officers to do something. Make sure that you’d do the same or be willing to do the same. Since I was 18 I’ve had some amazing leaders and I’ve also had some not so amazing leaders and I can honestly say I’ve learned how to lead from the good ones and how not to lead from the bad ones. I’ve taken the good and the bad and have been able to wrap what I’ve learned from both and apply it to my everyday lifestyle, both at work and at home. Whether it’s helping or directing a fellow officer that’s new to the job or to being a good father to my children at home. Lead from the front not from the rear. I’ve found it easier to lead when you’re respected by your coworkers, and how do we get respect? By giving respect, see the minuet that you demand respect it’s that same minuet that you will lose respect. You gain respect by being a good, fair leader. Like I said in the beginning, never ask of someone that you wouldn’t be willing to do yourself. You can never forget that at some point in your career or life you’ve been new as well. So as you move up in you’re career try to not forget where you came from. I’ve seen so many people get in that leadership position and as some may call it, “they’ve drank the cool aid”. What does that mean? It means that they forget where they came from. That they are asking for things that they wouldn’t do. Don’t be like that, don’t drink the cool aid. Be the leader that leads from the front.
