About

Edward Underwood is an educator, learning specialist, and founder of Touchstone Learning Solutions, where he helps individuals and organizations better understand how learning, training, and performance interact. With more than two decades of experience in education, his background includes teaching, adult education, educational counseling, literacy coaching, mentoring, and curriculum development. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in Spanish Language and Literature from Youngstown State University and later completed additional studies in elementary education at Slippery Rock University.
Underwood’s professional work has increasingly focused on diagnosing the underlying causes of learning and performance challenges rather than simply addressing visible symptoms. Through Touchstone Learning Solutions, he developed the Touchstone Learning Profile and the broader Touchstone Performance System to help identify how people process information, where learning may break down, and what factors influence performance. His approach draws on his experience working with students, parents, teachers, counselors, and professionals, with an emphasis on differentiated learning, critical thinking, communication, and practical development.
As the creator of the Thought Purity Method, Underwood has expanded his work into a framework centered on cognitive clarity, emotional mastery, strategic execution, and ethical leadership. He has also authored *How You Actually Learn* and *Aligned: Mastering the Field with the Thought Purity Method*, further developing his ideas about learning and personal development. Throughout his career, Underwood has remained focused on helping people understand their own learning processes, build confidence and capability, and apply knowledge more effectively in educational, professional, and personal settings.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

I believe that I was sent here to do this work. Otherwise I would not have been able to stick to it so long through the ups and downs. My background and foundation from my parents raised me and instilled in me the focus on what is important, and this work is definitely important.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Fulfillment doesn't come from the outside, it comes from the inside. People should do what they want to do if they're fulfilled. Fulfillment at the personal level is the most important advice.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

If they find fulfillment in that then I would tell them to go for it. They have to have the understanding of what it is they're moving into because education is not the same as schooling. It's hard to teach in a system that's built the way it is.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is that people don't question what they think they already know. Society believes education can only happen in a school. The greatest opportunity is the timing as we move from the age of information into the age of knowing, and the best thing to know is who you are and how you learn.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I value autonomy. I value being in control of my time and my relationships. I believe in voluntarism, voluntary relationships not forced relationships. That allows you to be fulfilled when you can manage and have control of those things.
