Christopher Keniley is a music educator, entrepreneur, worship leader, clinician, and adjudicator based in Mattoon, Illinois. With more than 30 years of experience in music and more than 25 years of operating Chris K Music, he has built his career around helping students, educators, and music programs grow through education, performance, and service.
Keniley began teaching private music lessons as a freshman in high school, turning an early passion for teaching into a lifelong profession. Today, he provides instruction across a wide range of instruments and musical disciplines, including percussion, piano, voice, guitar, bass, strings, woodwinds, brass, music theory, and more. He works with students both in person and online, making individualized music education accessible to musicians of different ages, backgrounds, and experience levels.
Beyond private instruction, Keniley provides instrument repair and piano tuning through Chris K Music and works extensively with school music programs through CK Marching Services. His work includes marching band instruction, clinics, arranging, drill design, visual programming, consulting, and adjudication. He has worked with numerous music programs and continues to serve as an adjudicator for marching band competitions.
His experience in music education also extends into the classroom. Keniley has served as an interim director of bands and was recognized as a Teacher of the Month while serving the Sullivan school community. He remains actively involved in music education and is a member of the Illinois Music Education Association.
Keniley's work has earned recognition including being named a 2026 GRAMMY Music Educator Award Quarterfinalist and receiving recognition through Marquis Who's Who among Music Educators. These honors reflect a career centered on music education, mentorship, and service to students and fellow educators.
Faith is also an important part of Keniley's life and leadership. As a worship leader, he uses his musical experience to serve his church community while encouraging musicians to develop their abilities and use their talents in meaningful ways.
Keniley attributes his success to a willingness to continually learn, adapt, build meaningful relationships, and remember where his journey began. Guided by faith, family, education, and service, he continues to use music to educate, encourage, and create opportunities for students, musicians, educators, and communities.

Be adaptable and persevere. Throughout my career, I’ve learned that things will not always go as planned. Staying committed through setbacks, being willing to make changes, and learning what works—and what doesn’t—has allowed me to continue growing and creating new opportunities.
Be patient, stay teachable, and be willing to do more than one thing. The music industry is constantly changing, so being adaptable and open to new opportunities is important. Build strong relationships, continue developing your skills, and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Most importantly, know the value of your experience and your work—don’t undervalue yourself just to get an opportunity.
One of the biggest challenges in my field is time management. There is a tremendous need for music education and many people looking for instruction, guidance, and support. The challenge is finding ways to help as many people as possible without stretching yourself too thin. At the same time, technology presents an incredible opportunity to expand that reach. I’m continuing to explore online courses, YouTube, and other digital resources that can make music education more accessible and allow me to share my experience with students and educators beyond my local community.
Faith, family, education, and service are the values that guide both my personal and professional life. As a believer in Jesus Christ, my faith shapes how I approach my work, relationships, and service to others. Being a husband and father means keeping family at the center of my priorities. As an educator, I believe strongly in creating opportunities for every student to learn, grow, and succeed. I am also committed to serving my community and advocating for music education and the arts so that future generations have opportunities to experience the lifelong impact of music.
