FOUNDER TO THE PROFILE
Business Development Manager, J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc.
“I attribute my success to grit, relationships, and a commitment to continuous learning. I took the long road into my career, starting in a scrapyard, spending years as a truck driver, and eventually working my way into business development. Every step taught me the value of hard work, humility, and keeping your word. I've been fortunate to have great mentors and opportunities along the way, but I've learned that success is earned by showing up every day, serving others, and being willing to do the jobs that others won't.”
Butch Davis has built his career the hard way, with hard work, hands-on experience, and a willingness to take the long road. His transportation journey began at 14 in a mom-and-pop scrapyard, where he loaded trucks before becoming a yard jockey and learning the ins and outs of moving freight. He went on to spend roughly 11 years as an over-the-road truck driver, gaining firsthand knowledge of the challenges drivers, shippers, and customers face every day. Today, that experience underpins his work as a Business Development Manager at J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc., where he helps businesses develop transportation solutions across North America. Butch joined J.B. Hunt four years ago in an entry-level sales role in his hometown of Texarkana before relocating to the company’s corporate headquarters in Northwest Arkansas. Without a high school diploma or college degree, he has built a successful career through persistence, relationship building, cold outreach, discovery calls, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to serve a customer, including getting his hands dirty and helping unload a shipment when necessary. His firsthand understanding of transportation, from the loading dock to the driver’s seat to the sales conversation, gives him a perspective that can’t be taught in a classroom. Today, he is known for his expertise in cross-border freight, strategic partnerships, and supply chain solutions. For Butch, the journey is about more than professional success. His work ethic was forged through personal challenges and a determination to face adversity head-on, and he carries those lessons into every part of his life. He is a proud father who places a high value on being present for his family and credits J.B. Hunt’s culture for allowing him to be there for the moments that matter. Whether he is building a customer relationship, solving a freight problem, or encouraging his daughters to push through adversity, Butch lives by a simple principle: be a man of your word, put in the work, and never forget where you came from. As he puts it, he took the long way to get here and collected a few stories worth sharing along the way.
IN HIS OWN WORDS
I attribute my success to grit, relationships, and a commitment to continuous learning. I took the long road into my career, starting in a scrapyard, spending years as a truck driver, and eventually working my way into business development. Every step taught me the value of hard work, humility, and keeping your word. I've been fortunate to have great mentors and opportunities along the way, but I've learned that success is earned by showing up every day, serving others, and being willing to do the jobs that others won't.
The best career advice I've ever received was simple: "Your reputation will arrive before you do." Early in my career, I learned that people may forget what you say, but they'll remember whether you kept your word. Whether I was loading trucks in a scrapyard, driving over the road, or building customer relationships in sales, I've tried to be someone people can count on. Skills can be learned and opportunities come and go, but your character, work ethic, and reputation follow you everywhere.
Transportation and logistics is an industry built on people. My advice is to invest in relationships, seek out mentors, and embrace challenges as learning opportunities. Some of my greatest career growth has come from stepping outside my comfort zone, listening more than I talk, and focusing on how I can help others succeed. Work hard, stay humble, and remember that your reputation is one of the most valuable assets you'll ever build
The biggest challenge in our industry is keeping pace with change. Transportation touches nearly everything we buy and use, and market conditions can shift quickly. The biggest opportunity is helping customers navigate that complexity. I enjoy being able to combine my experience from the loading dock, the driver's seat, and the sales side of the business to solve problems and create value. As technology advances, the need for people who understand both the operational and human side of transportation has never been greater.
The values that matter most to me are faith, family, integrity, perseverance, and hard work. Those aren't just words to me, they're lessons learned through experience. My wife and I have faced some difficult seasons, including a time when we were homeless. When I applied to J.B. Hunt, I was working as a trashman in the mornings and driving a truck at night. We didn't have much, but we never stopped believing that if we kept showing up, kept working, and kept pushing forward, our circumstances could change.
One of my greatest motivations has always been my daughters. They've seen us struggle, they've seen us fail, and they've seen us get knocked down. But they've also seen us get back up every time. I want them to know that success isn't about never failing; it's about refusing to quit. I want them to see that adversity doesn't define you, your response to it does.
Today, whether I'm serving customers, working with my team, or being a father, I try to live by a simple principle: be a man of your word, treat people right, work hard, and never give up. Success comes and goes, but character, resilience, and the example you set for others are what truly last.
