Taking the Long Road

Today, Butch serves as a Business Development Manager for J.B. Hunt Transport Services, helping businesses develop transportation and supply chain solutions across North America. He's known for his expertise in cross-border freight, strategic partnerships, and customer-focused problem-solving. But his path to success looked very different from the traditional career blueprint.

Butch began working at just 14 years old in a mom-and-pop scrapyard, loading trucks and eventually becoming a yard jockey. It was there that he developed an appreciation for hard work and gained a firsthand education in the movement of freight. That experience eventually led him behind the wheel, where he spent approximately 11 years as an over-the-road truck driver.

Those years on the road provided a perspective few transportation professionals possess. Butch experienced the realities of the industry from the driver's seat, learning firsthand the challenges faced by drivers, shippers, receivers, and customers. Today, that experience allows him to approach business challenges with a practical understanding of what it takes to keep freight moving.

"I took the long road into my career," Butch said. "Every step taught me the value of hard work, humility, and keeping your word."

What makes his story particularly remarkable is that he achieved his success without a high school diploma or college degree. Instead, he built his career through persistence, relationship building, cold outreach, discovery calls, and an unwavering commitment to serving customers.

Butch is quick to point out that success wasn't always guaranteed.

"There was a time when my wife and I were homeless," he said. "When I applied to J.B. Hunt, I was working as a trashman in the mornings and driving a truck at night. We were doing everything we could to provide for our family. We didn't have much, but we never stopped believing that if we kept showing up, kept working, and kept pushing forward, our circumstances could change."

That resilience became the foundation for both his career and his family life.

One of Butch's greatest motivations has always been his daughters. He hopes they understand that success is not about avoiding failure. It's about refusing to stay down when life knocks you down.

"They've seen us struggle, they've seen us fail, and they've seen us get knocked down," he said. "But they've also seen us get back up every time. I want them to know that success isn't about never failing; it's about refusing to quit. I want them to see that adversity doesn't define you. Your response to it does."

That perspective influences the advice he shares with young men entering the transportation and logistics industry.

"Transportation and logistics is a people business," Butch explained. "Invest in relationships, seek out mentors, and embrace challenges as learning opportunities. Some of my greatest career growth has come from stepping outside my comfort zone, listening more than I talk, and focusing on how I can help others succeed. Work hard, stay humble, and remember that your reputation is one of the most valuable assets you'll ever build."

In fact, the best career advice Butch ever received centered around reputation.

"Your reputation will arrive before you do," he said. "People may forget what you say, but they'll remember whether you kept your word. Whether I was loading trucks in a scrapyard, driving over the road, or building customer relationships in sales, I've tried to be someone people can count on. Skills can be learned and opportunities come and go, but your character, work ethic, and reputation follow you everywhere."

As the transportation industry continues to evolve, Butch sees both challenges and opportunities ahead.

"The biggest challenge in our industry is keeping pace with change," he said. "Transportation touches nearly everything we buy and use, and market conditions can shift quickly. The biggest opportunity is helping customers navigate that complexity."

Having worked on the loading dock, behind the wheel, and now in supply chain consulting and business development, Butch understands how every piece of the transportation puzzle connects.

"As technology advances, the need for people who understand both the operational and human side of transportation has never been greater," he said. "Technology is important, but relationships, trust, and execution still drive success."

While Butch has achieved professional success, the values that guide him remain unchanged. Faith, family, integrity, perseverance, and hard work continue to define both his personal and professional life.

"Those aren't just words to me," he said. "They're lessons learned through experience."

His experiences taught him that true success is measured by more than a title, a paycheck, or a professional accomplishment. It is measured by the example he sets for others, especially his daughters.

Today, whether he's serving customers, building partnerships, solving freight challenges, or being a father, Butch strives to live by a simple principle: be a man of your word, treat people right, work hard, and never give up.

Looking back, Butch credits grit, relationships, continuous learning, and the support of mentors, teammates, and family for helping him get where he is today. But his proudest accomplishment isn't a title or career milestone. It's showing his daughters that adversity does not have to define their future.

They have seen him and his wife struggle. They have seen them fail. They have seen them face uncertainty and hardship. But they have also seen them refuse to quit.

That's the legacy Butch hopes to leave behind: proof that where you start does not determine where you finish. With character, perseverance, faith, and an unwavering commitment to keep moving forward, even the longest road can lead somewhere remarkable.

As Butch likes to say, he took the long way to get here and collected a few stories worth sharing along the way. And perhaps the most important lesson from those stories is this: success isn't about never falling down. It's about getting back up one more time than life knocks you down.
