Warrior to Elder : a path for the aging man

From Warrior to Elder: Why This Journey Matters

By Ed Collins, MA, LPC

Introduction: Why This Book?

I am getting older.

That is a fact of my life. It is also a fact of life for every man who lives long enough to face it, whether he admits it or not.

That realization can be depressing, unsettling, even frightening.

Or it can become something different.

It can become an invitation.

We are walking a path countless men before us have walked, and more join our number every day. We are living longer than previous generations, yet many of us arrive at this stage with very little preparation for what it means emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Because of that truth, and because I felt unprepared when my own aging became impossible to ignore, I started looking for guidance.

I found plenty of material on the medical side of aging. I found research papers. I found many thoughtful books about women and aging.

But I found far less that spoke directly to the inner life of the aging male—the man who still feels capable, still wants purpose, still wants to matter, but senses that the world is beginning to see him differently.

So I decided to write into that gap.

I have a personal stake in this subject. I am an older man myself, and I am also a licensed mental health therapist with nearly 30 years of experience helping people work through major life transitions.

This book grows out of both places: professional experience and personal recognition.

Why Now?

Men over 40 are already standing at the edge of this transition, even if they do not yet think of themselves as aging.

Careers begin to shift. Bodies send new messages. Children grow up. Parents decline. The future no longer feels endless.

By 50, 60, and beyond, many men are asking questions they never expected to ask:

Who am I if I am no longer needed in the same way?

What do I do with the experience I have gathered?

How do I remain useful, connected, and alive inside?

There are answers.
