About

Zachary Lohouse has been an author and writing consultant for 17 years, having started right out of high school after attending a high school for writing where he completed several novels. He primarily writes fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers, and also creates poetry and music. In addition to his writing, he tutors adults to overcome writer's block and achieve publication, and he engages in website design and game design. Lohouse studied creative writing at Monroe Community College. He received career advice from a professor there emphasizing that one should aim for B+ rather than perfection and avoid editing the first draft until it is complete.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the expansive support network provided by my family and friends, alongside my faith and the many struggles that have hardened and calcified me into a stubborn force of momentum.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I think that if you don't aim for perfect, aim for B+. At least when you have a mindset like mine, when you're a perfectionist, you need to accept that you're never gonna rank 10 on anything, because anytime anything hits 10, the scale moves up. you're always going to be competing with yourself. If you consider anything you make perfect, you'll never reach it again. You'll never improve. So, sort of, Calf off your scale of what you can do at 8 or 9. So that you can recognize that there's room for improvement. But be okay with that. And I mean, this was a long conversation with one of my favorite professors at MCC. I honestly can't remember his name anymore, because it was more than 10 years ago, but I only had him for a semester, but alongside that, he said, don't edit your first draft until you're done.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

Don't try simply to write what is popular. In the short run, you are unlikely to find success, but if you don't love what you write, it will become nothing more than a job--robbing your passion of its meaning. Write what you love. Write for you-- and never pretend to be perfect. There is a reader for everything written, and audience for every art. Put yourself out there enough, and they will find you.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Honestly, I think it's competing with Dark Romance. ... dominating the field right now. Sort of over-the-top explicit material.
