IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to persistence, adaptability, and my willingness to take ownership, keep learning, and build relationships with the people around me. My drive, supported by my wife of 28 years, who gives me guidance and encourages me to take things to the next level.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't take failure as a stopping point, but use failure as a stepping stone to your success.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

Stay with it. Find someone that can mentor you who has been doing it. Keep learning. Keep showing up. Treat people well. Take responsibility. Don't be afraid to fail. And don't worry so much about having the entire road mapped out.

And finally, work hard, but don't forget who you are.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The industry is changing quickly, and that can be intimidating. But I've learned throughout my career that change can also create opportunities. I've had to reinvent myself several times. Technology changed. My responsibilities changed. I think that's going to be the most important skill in cybersecurity going forward: the ability to keep learning and adapt before the industry forces you to.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

As I've gotten older, I've realized that success isn't just about what you accomplish. It's also about how you get there and how you treat people along the way. Do what you say you're going to do. Take responsibility for your actions. Treat people with respect. Keep going when things get difficult. Never stop learning. Those values have guided me through my career, but they mean even more to me outside of work. A successful career is something I'm proud of. But being someone my family, friends, coworkers, and customers can trust is ultimately more important to me.
