About

Stephen Pierce is an author and communications strategist based in LaRue, Texas, whose professional career spans journalism, public affairs, marketing, and county government. Before focusing on fiction writing, he served nearly 10 years in the U.S. Air Force as a journalist and public affairs specialist, followed by five years as a business reporter and copy editor at The Daily Republic. He subsequently spent five years in marketing, including serving as Marketing Director for the 60th Services Squadron at Travis Air Force Base. Pierce also held several positions with Solano County, including Field Representative for an elected official, Public Communications Officer, and Senior Management Analyst, before becoming General Manager of the Solano County Fair Association. These varied experiences strengthened his expertise in communications, public relations, organizational management, and storytelling.
Since pursuing his longstanding ambition to write, Pierce has published two suspense thriller novels, Invisible Defense in 2021 and its sequel, Expunged, in 2025. Both books feature Clark Solo, a San Francisco newspaper reporter whose investigations draw him into the very stories he covers. Pierce is currently developing the third installment in the Clark Solo series while also working on a separate story exploring a postwar future in the United States and the consequences of a society fractured by social extremism. His background in journalism and public communications informs his writing, bringing an understanding of reporting, public affairs, and human behavior to his fictional narratives. As an independent author, he continues to expand his creative portfolio while drawing on decades of professional experience.
Pierce holds an M.P.A. from Golden Gate University, an A.S. in Public Affairs from the Community College of the Air Force, and a B.S. in Industrial Technology from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Throughout his career, he has received 27 awards recognizing excellence in programming, marketing, public relations, and writing. His achievements include recognition for producing the best-funded newspaper in the Air Force and the 2008 Award of Excellence in Economic Development Programs from the California Association for Local Economic Development for his work on the Solano County Index of Economic and Community Progress. Pierce attributes his success to refusing to let the fear of not knowing what he was doing prevent him from moving forward. Guided by integrity and his faith in God, he has learned to embrace uncertainty, take calculated risks, and pursue opportunities that support both his professional growth and creative ambitions.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to not giving in to the fear that I don't know what I'm doing. Throughout my career I often started positions feeling uncertain about my abilities but focused on learning and performing the work rather than letting uncertainty stop me.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice was that it is cheaper to make a mistake and correct it than to wait until everything is perfect because the cost of inaction is higher. This encourages taking calculated chances since you can always recover from a failed chance.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

Maintain integrity despite industry pressures toward clickbait and sensationalism. Find principled role models like Woodward and Bernstein and commit to accurate meaningful reporting even when the profession has changed.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Journalism has been devalued with reduced staff and reliance on press releases instead of independent reporting. Social media creates echo chambers where outlets target narrow audiences leading to bias rather than truthful broad communication.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is key saying what I mean with no hidden agendas and expecting the same from others. Faith in God gives confidence to take risks knowing I will be provided for.
