About

Shawn O’Brien serves as a Senior Construction Manager at Madison Energy Infrastructure, where he leads the construction and execution of large-scale solar energy projects across the United States. In this role, he oversees all phases of construction, including civil, electrical, and mechanical scopes, from project startup through closeout. His responsibilities also include managing utility interconnections, coordinating field operations, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

With extensive experience managing high-priority construction projects, O’Brien routinely leads teams of up to 80 personnel, fostering a culture centered on safety, accountability, teamwork, and operational excellence. His disciplined approach to construction management has earned him a reputation for driving successful project outcomes while maintaining strong relationships with clients, contractors, utility representatives, and other project stakeholders.

Prior to entering the renewable energy industry, O’Brien built more than two decades of experience in the oil and gas sector, developing a strong foundation in complex field operations, construction management, logistics, quality control, and project execution. His career includes leadership positions with Boots & Coots Well Control, Baker Hughes, Kinder Morgan, VIRTEXCO Corporation, Solar Energy Solutions, and a construction company in Norfolk, Virginia, where he served as a superintendent. He also owned and operated Five Points Oil & Gas Solutions, working as a completions consultant for 11 years and supporting a wide range of oil and gas development projects.

Approximately three and a half years ago, O’Brien transitioned into the solar energy industry, bringing his extensive construction and project management expertise to the rapidly growing renewable energy market. His diverse background provides a unique perspective that enables him to effectively manage complex projects, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and overcome construction challenges in demanding environments.

Although he completed coursework at San Jacinto College, O’Brien attributes much of his professional development and success to hands-on experience, hard work, and the lessons learned throughout his career in the field. He believes strong leadership is built on accountability, continuous learning, and an unwavering commitment to executing work safely, accurately, and efficiently.

O’Brien credits his success to surrounding himself with talented teams, maintaining unwavering determination and focus, and committing to learning every aspect of his profession. He values honesty, loyalty, integrity, and professionalism in both his personal and professional relationships and strives to lead by example on every project he undertakes.

For those considering a career in construction or energy, O’Brien encourages young professionals to pursue work they are genuinely passionate about rather than simply taking a job for the sake of employment. He believes that dedication, curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a genuine interest in one's craft provide the foundation for a rewarding and long-lasting career.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to having a great team around me and maintaining a strong sense of determination. No one succeeds alone, and I’ve been fortunate to work with talented people who contribute to achieving our goals.

I also believe that success isn’t simply handed to you. You have to be willing to put in the work, stay committed, and take advantage of the opportunities that come your way. Through hard work, persistence, and teamwork, I’ve been able to continue growing both personally and professionally.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received was to stay focused and learn everything you can about the work you’re doing. For me, that’s been one of the biggest keys to success.

The more knowledge and experience you gain, the more valuable you become. I’ve always tried to understand not just my own responsibilities, but the entire process around me. By staying focused, continuing to learn, and taking every opportunity to expand your skills, you set yourself up for long-term growth and success in your career.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

My advice to young men entering this industry is to find something they’re truly passionate about and commit to it. Don’t just take a job for the sake of having a job. When you’re passionate about what you do, you’re more motivated to learn, improve, and overcome challenges.

This industry can be demanding, but if you take pride in your work and stay dedicated to continuous growth, it can become a rewarding long-term career. The people who are most successful are usually the ones who genuinely enjoy what they do and are always looking for ways to get better at it.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in our field right now is the constant pressure to choose the lowest-cost option upfront. While it may save money initially, it often leads to rework, delays, and additional expenses later. In many cases, investing in quality materials, proper planning, and doing the job right the first time is ultimately more cost-effective than taking shortcuts and having to fix issues multiple times.

At the same time, this creates an opportunity for companies that focus on quality, efficiency, and long-term value. By demonstrating the true cost savings of doing things correctly from the start, we can deliver better results for clients and projects alike.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are honesty and loyalty. I believe in being completely honest about what you're doing, staying true to your word, and taking responsibility for your actions.

I also place a high value on loyalty, both to the people I work with and to those I surround myself with in my personal life. Building trust, supporting your team, and maintaining strong relationships are essential to long-term success. I believe that when you're honest, loyal, and committed to the people and goals around you, you create a foundation for success both professionally and personally
