Rodney Shuler is an independent comic book artist, writer, and character designer based in Santee, South Carolina, with more than 25 years of experience in the arts. A self-taught artist, Shuler began drawing at the age of seven and has developed a diverse creative portfolio that includes comic books, abstract paintings, posters, album covers, comic book covers, and layout designs. He has been creating comics professionally through Acid World Entertainment since 1993 and also works as a concept and design artist with AliveShoes.
Shuler is passionate about bringing his own stories and characters to life, handling both the writing and artwork for his projects. His work includes *The Parler Chronicles*, including the project *The Color Code*, and he is pursuing publication of his first volume through BookBaby. He has also spent nearly two decades working as a hotel janitor, balancing his day-to-day responsibilities with his commitment to developing his career as an artist. His educational background includes studying Fine/Studio Arts at South Carolina State University, although he ultimately continued developing his artistic abilities independently.
Shuler attributes much of his success to the unwavering support of his mother, father, and grandmother, who believed in his abilities and taught him the importance of perseverance. Growing up on a family farm in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, reinforced those lessons and gave him a strong appreciation for hard work and determination. Today, he encourages aspiring artists and creators to maintain a positive attitude, avoid negative influences, and remain committed to their goals even when progress is difficult. For Shuler, persistence and the willingness to keep moving forward are essential to turning a creative vision into reality.

    What do you attribute your success to?

    My mom and dad believed in me from the start and taught me the essence of never giving up. They were my biggest fans along with my grandma. I was born and raised on a farm so I know about hard work from them and what they went through. Family was there for me.

    What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

    My art teachers told me to never give up on art and just keep pursuing it because they knew I had a lot of talent. I never stop.

    What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

    Never give up, you know? Just keep going. Never give up. Because when you give up, that's when you lose. Point blank.

    What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

    It's an ongoing endeavor getting published. I'm a starving artist, everything costs money. I have a house and property to take care of. But it's not a challenge to me, it's just life. You just gotta do what you gotta do until you get it. It's coming.

    What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

    My main values are just hard work. Maintaining a positive attitude, staying away from negative people. And just living life to the fullest. You gotta live life how it comes. You just can't be there sticking in the mud. You gotta get out there and do something if you wanna make things happen.
