FOUNDER TO THE PROFILE
Mike Merna
Account Executive, ScienceLogic
“My competitive edge has been with me since childhood. Whatever I did, whether swimming, basketball, or playing cards, I wanted to be the best at it. I've always done it the right way, learning it and then sharing it by teaching other people. I'm a real team player who steps up in my career, as a parent, and as a mentor. I get more out of mentoring others and seeing them succeed than anything else.”

The Q and A

01
What do you attribute your success to?
My competitive edge has been with me since childhood. Whatever I did, whether swimming, basketball, or playing cards, I wanted to be the best at it. I've always done it the right way, learning it and then sharing it by teaching other people. I'm a real team player who steps up in my career, as a parent, and as a mentor. I get more out of mentoring others and seeing them succeed than anything else.

02
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Never too high, never too low. Also, be a good read of situations and use paranoia in the right way to ask the right questions and dig in for information. Finding a champion inside the organization who can sell on your behalf when you're not in the room has been extremely helpful.

03
What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?
Find someone that's been successful and be a sponge. Dig in, try things, come with ideas. Establish your personal brand and what you want to be known as. Know who you are so you're confident and not scared to fail. Jump into things, challenge yourself every three to four years, and remember success comes from the journey and experiences, not just accolades or money.
-
04
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
AI and where it's going. Being able to tie solutions to revenue impact, risk mitigation, cost efficiency, or competitive/innovative edge. The space is propped up like the dot-com bubble but there's opportunity in the single intelligence layer for infrastructure across mainframe, on-premise, cloud, and AI.

05
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Credibility, trust, drive, competitiveness, honesty, being proactive not reactive, and doing what you say you're going to do. Follow through is important.
