About

Dwight Burch is the Senior Chaplain at Wakulla Correctional Institution in Crawfordville, Florida, serving with the Florida Department of Corrections. His journey in corrections began in 2013 as a volunteer with a juvenile gang unit, and more than a decade later, he continues to dedicate his career to helping incarcerated individuals find purpose, accountability, and a path toward successful reentry. In his role, Burch leads the Faith and Character Camp program and oversees religious services representing approximately 85 different religious codes, ensuring that inmates’ constitutional rights and First Amendment protections are respected.
Burch coordinates a comprehensive range of programming designed to prepare participants for life beyond incarceration, including victim impact education, financial literacy, resume building, and other personal development opportunities. The Faith and Character program requires 400 hours for graduation and is part of a broader effort at Wakulla Correctional Institution to address the mindset and behaviors that can contribute to reoffending. He also manages two on-site seminaries while providing palliative care visits, hospital support for inmates, crisis intervention for staff and their families, and guidance to more than 300 volunteers. Through these responsibilities, he has built strong relationships with community leaders and organizations to expand opportunities for those preparing to return to society.
Reentry remains one of Burch’s greatest professional passions. He is working toward establishing a halfway house and developing partnerships with educational institutions to create pathways to employment for individuals leaving incarceration. Burch holds an undergraduate degree in criminal justice and is continuing his education through graduate studies in chaplaincy and theology. His work reflects a commitment to faith, service, leadership, and second chances, with a focus on helping individuals make meaningful changes while strengthening the communities to which they will ultimately return.
