IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my upbringing from my parents and extended family, their commitment to education and instilling good morals, standards, and values. Growing up in the church added another layer. It takes a village, and I learned early how my actions affect others and to own that fully. Accountability has been everything.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was from my basketball coach in college. He told me that when you go through adversity in life, it can actually help you grow stronger, and when you get to where you're trying to go, you'll appreciate it more because of all the things you've been through.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

You have to understand that a lot of kids go through things outside of school that impact their learning and behavior. There's always more to their story. Be open and honest, create a safe place where they feel they can be themselves without bias or judgment.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is the mental health aspect and the lack of resources available to properly address it. A big part of my work is helping families and students connect to the resources they need, even when those resources are limited.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Accountability is at the core. Having norms and values that align, treating people with dignity and respect, being aware of how my behaviors influence others, and understanding that my scope is bigger than myself. Creating real change is important.
