He has been with Life Point Law since 2015, progressing from paralegal and resource specialist to licensed legal intern, attorney, and ultimately partner. In his current role, Paker also contributes to firm-wide training, teaches classes on Medicaid, and regularly appears on the Aging Options radio show, combining his legal knowledge with a strong commitment to helping older adults and their families navigate complex issues. Paker's path to law was shaped by an earlier career in education and a desire to serve others. After working as an educator, he transitioned into the legal field, earned a paralegal certification from Tacoma Community College, and later pursued his Juris Doctor at Seattle University School of Law while building practical experience in legal services. He developed a particular expertise in Medicaid planning and elder law, dedicating himself to understanding the complexities of the field and making that knowledge accessible to clients and other professionals. His work has earned recognition, including the 2023 Outstanding New Lawyer award from the King County Bar Association’s New Lawyers Division and the CALI Excellence for the Future Award for Advanced Elder Law. Beyond his legal career, Paker is an author and motivational speaker whose work reflects his commitment to compassion, resilience, and helping others. His book, *My Tattooed Soul*, explores personal experiences, identity, resilience, and mental health, with the goal of encouraging people to find strength in their struggles. He has also volunteered as a career trainer, helping individuals develop resumes, cover letters, networking skills, and interviewing abilities, and has served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Paker attributes his success to dedicated study, perseverance, family support, and a commitment to treating people with compassion, believing that putting people first creates meaningful and lasting impact.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

The Q and A

  1. 01

What do you attribute your success to?

Hard work and dedication to constant improvement, combined with family support and turning personal struggles into strengths has allowed me to reimagine my life and advocate for others to do the same through my book My Tattooed Soul.

  2. 02

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

It doesn't matter how may times you fall down. It only matters that you always get back up and learn something from the fall.

  3. 03

What advice would you give to young men entering your industry?

Understand that the field includes a lot of stress with high rates of anxiety, mental health issues, suicide and addiction among attorneys. Strive to find a work-life balance and make sure you are working for a firm that is open to supporting you with mental health or stress issues. You do not have to do it all yourself or pretend to have ll the answers just because you are an attorney. We all need help from time to time. Just as importantly, treat your staff well. They are not tools to use or lesser beings because they did not go to law school. In fact, they will likely be a big factor in your success or failure.

  4. 04

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Federal cuts to Medicaid funding is affecting processing times for Medicaid applications and causing local agencies to change interpretations of long-standing rules leading to more denials and hearings. In the last year I have had 12 hearings compared to only 2 in my first 10 years. There is a high need for attorneys who are able to become real Medicaid experts rather than dabbling in Medicaid as an add on service.

  5. 05

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Advocating for mental health and normalizing conversations about illnesses like bipolar and schizophrenia that people have strong opinions about without information. We have come a long way in opening up about ADHD and Autism but so many other challenges are highly stigmatized and taboo.
